The electric force is constant and does work, so the speed changes.
The magnetic force is always perpendicular to the velocity, so it changes
direction but never speed. The speed graph stays flat whenever the
electric field is off.
In the crossed-field arrangement the particle passes straight through
only when the two forces balance, at v = E/B.
Check the directions with the left hand rule, remembering that it
takes conventional current: for an electron the second finger points
opposite to the way the electron is moving. With the field into the
page and the particle moving to the right, a proton is pushed up and
an electron down.
